Welcome to my website where you will find examples of my paintings and screenprints available to view and purchase. You will also find calendars, greetings cards and coming soon, giclee prints.
I have lived at the foot of the Malvern Hills since moving here from London in 1985 and have been painting here ever since. The Malvern Hills have opened my eyes to the ever changing colours, light and moods of landscape which has inspired my work. I have also been a tutor at Malvern Hills College for the past 23 years.
My time at the Royal Academy Schools in London began with a year of intense drawing from the life model. It was a great grounding in drawing and observation of form. My interests then turned to still life painting using oils. Now I work in several mediums, including ink and watercolour, oil, screenprint and charcoal.
I paint in ink and watercolour, in situ whenever possible. Natural forms such as hogweed and teasles feature strongly. I draw using ink and dip pen, reed pen, bamboo pen, brush or anything that can be sharpened! These calligraphic type marks are combined with free flowing washes to try and suggest the feeling of being out in the fresh air.
Oils invite the use of strong vibrant colour in landscape as well as still lives and flowers. To me a still life is a composed landscape on a small scale. A palette knife is sometimes used to draw as well as apply areas of colour.
Screenprint combines ink drawings with layers of strong acrylic colour, each layer using a fresh stencil on a screen. Drawings are transferred to a screen using light sensitive emulsion and UV light. I enjoy experimenting to create different patterns and textures. The possibilities are endless!
In my opinion, charcoal is the drawing medium closest to paint. It can produce subtle misty tones alongside sharp dramatic contrasts, great for producing the illusion of distance.
